Rejoicing is Our Task

Are you focused on tasks? If you are task-motivated kind of person, you need something you can do, something to accomplish. You likely aren’t eager to sit still. The question arises when someone is hurt, sad, lonely, or conflicted: “What can I do?” What if you are faced with a predicament where the task is beyond you, or where you may not see how you can accomplish anything?

Paul was asked about these kinds of issues in Philippians. He had to answer for conflict and for a season where he may not be sure he was accomplishing much by earthly consideration. And here is the Scripture from Philippians 1:18–20, “…that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.”

Those phrases, “in every way … full … as always,” communicate the entirety of our personhood. Every aspect of who we are is transformed, changed, redeemed, made of heavenly use. The great use is this: Christ is proclaimed. We miss the mark when we think Christ isn’t involved even in those places where we can’t see the forest for the trees.

Paul also indicates an eager expectation and a supernatural hope. Have you had a pet who wanted nothing more than to get outside? And the time comes when you let them out, only for them to turn around in utter disappointment—as if they didn’t know what to do once they were out there? This is not the case for us! Every part of who we are is designed to proclaim Christ. Assurance motivates our actions. With eagerness we can pray, seek fellowship, walk in obedience of faith. Why? Because our hope is grounded firmly in Christ. He will be proclaimed. Our hope came to us in complete humanness; we are assured He knows our weaknesses, our infirmities, and every care we could consider. And yet all is transformed and redeemed in Him.

Christ gives you the task of experiencing His wonderful work in every area of your life. Are you eager to see that hope come alive each day? Be of full courage, no matter the situation, Christ will be honored in you as you turn to the Spirit working in you.
