Tomorrow marks four years of my official start date as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Wellsboro. In many ways it seems like only yesterday. In many ways it seems like my family has been [here] for a decade. As I remember those first few Sunday mornings, I consider what transformation the Lord has worked both in my family and in our congregation.
I take joy in looking [back,] bringing to mind discussions about building projects and intimate conversations with new families, couples, or individuals who are now old families, couples, or individuals. I think of the bittersweet moments of saying goodbye to those who have moved away and of those who have entered glory.
As a preacher, I remember the various books and sermon series, the Sunday school materials and Sunday evening lectures. Perhaps even more so, I think of the lively events, games, lunches, and morning coffees I’ve had with so many of you.
A quote that tugs at the heartstrings puts it this way: “I wish there was a way to know we were in the good ol’ days before we left them.” Though every week there seems to be busyness, and every month a challenge or conflict, but the greater glory of God’s church proves there are good ol’ days—and we’re in them every step of the journey.
As we grow and experience the powerful work of the gospel take deeper root in our congregation day by day, let us remember that we aren’t looking back at just what used to be. We’re looking forward at what is to come. The Lord has, is, and continues to grow and bless His people.
I’m looking forward to the next four years with resolved joy. Pray for a deeper sense of the good ol’ days we have set before us even now.
Pastor Chris
