Medicine

Medicine

As a kind of update concerning my tick adventure, I ended up with Lyme disease and received antibiotics. According to the doctor’s counsel, I take the capsules with food. The prescription lasts ten days, and soon I’ll be able to put this journey behind me (until the next tick comes along).

I went to take my evening capsule, grabbed a cup of yogurt, and sat down on the couch. Emily turned to me and asked if I was taking my medicine with the yogurt. She worked in a pharmacy before full-time homemaker. I was unaware dairy hinders the effectiveness of the medication. I had to change what I ate to ensure the fullness of the medicine!

So much in our sanctification is hindered for the same reason—we swim in the waters of selfishness, worldliness, and apathy while expecting spiritual invigoration. Colossians 3:5–6 convicts us so concisely, “put to death sin!” We have been granted a supernatural medicine that works through every facet of our life, every crevice of our mind, and every recess in our heart. Yet, we too often lack in our spiritual experience of new life because we refuse to change the diet.

As we put off the old life, the Old Man Adam, we are not the worse for it. Rather, the medicine takes shape in us as we are reformed into the New Man Christ. We are the better—every part improved!

How can we change habits this week to experience the glorious work of the Spirit’s medicine?
