Last weekend, our family had the joy of spending time with another family in some Pine Creek waterfalls. The girls splashed and climbed as did the adults.
After some time, we all began the joyful discovery of the environment surrounding us. One by one, the children uncovered rocks, poked their heads under the overhangs, and looked more intently into the water. One by one, the children unearthed crayfish, minnows, salamanders, water striders, and spiders.
These little creatures surrounded us from the start, but what joy we experience when we suddenly recognize the reality of where we play, of experiencing where we live. The fast little salamanders brought delightful giggles as they quickly passed from one hand to another—each child finding fascination in the gift God gave of squirmy things.
Jesus makes it a point that His people will be a people who joyously unpack the truths He gives. According to John 8:31–32, we find a delight-filled freedom to discover and rediscover the faithful teachings He leads us to follow in discipline. Are we enjoying the freedom of exploring the why of what we believe? We can live in truth all day, but are we not called to enjoy and delight in all that comes out of Christ’s rich Word?
Let us take joy in meditating, ruminating, chewing on the “faithful doctrine.” As we do we find life-worthy applications, we discover topics and questions worthy of exploration, and we discover the rich fellowship of rejoicing with the saints as we dig deeper together. Like a tree planted and growing, so let us be ever-satisfied in what He gives us (Psalm 1).
