A Gift Note

How are you using the gifts God has given you? Are you actively thinking, not only of your gratitude for those gifts, but of how He has uniquely designed you to enjoy being used of Him through those gifts?

As I was re-reading the Sermon on the Mount this week, I realized I have missed a wonderful secondary note within the Matthew 6:19–21. The passage explains that what we store up in heaven is far more glorious than what we store up on earth. Yet what else can we understand based on the connection to the following verses (like Matt. 6:26–30) about what we have and what we do day-to-day?

We take treasures, good gifts from the Father, and hide them in the attic, lay them in a box somewhere in the garage, shove those gifts in a cabinet or dresser. After time, we remember the gifts and go to look for them only to find they are in a useless state or completely removed from the place by our poor stewardship. The text is specifically addressing our possessions. But deeper things jump out at us from this rich Scripture. What is misused on earth falls prey to temptation and works of the devil—we must acknowledge what the Father has given us as we behold His Kingdom come.

Gifts do not get eaten by moths, wear out with rust and decay, nor are they as easily robbed from us when we are putting these good gifts to use regularly for the Kingdom of Heaven. We are called upon to think of the spiritual gifts our Father has given to us, the fruit of the Spirit (as listed in Galatians 5:22–24). Our mind should regularly dwell on how we are utilizing, stewarding, experiencing growth in these areas. Our soul ought not to be in such a state that moths, rust, or Satan have hold on our gifts! Treasures in Heaven, as a heart set on heaven, are to be made of spiritual use today as we enjoy life in Christ our King.

How are you experiencing Him as you use your gifts today?
