I shared a bit in Sunday school about our family adventure of picking up the dogs from their surgery last week. We took them both to East Smithfield (a wonderful facility by the way), so we planned for a long drive. Two crates in the back, three girls in the middle.
When I picked up the dogs, they were eager to get home but did their business and went into their crates. However, as we passed through Troy an odor crept up the front of the van. So, on the side of the road—in the middle of nowhere, next to an overgrown swamp, with tractor trailers flying by—Emily and I cleaned up dog crates with whatever we could find in the glove box.
The experience makes for a good story, just like a “good” hunter. Things did not go as I planned. The frustration of those experiences comes from a wish that the dogs could communicate, or at least they could understand what you, their master, want and why.
How often are we on the journey home and end up forcing ourselves into a detour, or somewhere next to a swamp? How much better is our Master. Our God is so far beyond our comprehension; He is God Most High, no created being. Yet He assumed our flesh, understands us better than we can understand our dogs. Directs us and cleans us of things far worse than what we dealt with in between Wellsboro and East Smithfield.
Our Lord Jesus Christ stops us and turns those swamps into moments where we come to better understand His will and purpose. He leads us to return to Him and find assurance.
If you are on the side of the road this week, look to the Faithful Master—remember He speaks to us with pardon and correction, compassion and rebuke, as He makes the journey home with His people.
