Tentpoles

One thing you don’t see very often, when driving around Hills Creek State Park or down around Morris, is a group of people sleeping under a collapsed tent. When my girls ask me to go set their pop-up tent in the backyard, I imagine they would be quite frustrated if I opened the hatch and told them to climb under the pile of fabric without a single pole placed.

We can place stakes all around the tent, have the best kind of fabric, and even bring all the best s’mores supplies, but there will be no proper camping without the tent poles. This truth was profoundly emphasized in the ancient Near East—at the time of the Old Testament.

The tent pole for us today must be prayer. If we are wrapped in the fabric of the Word of God, the tentpole that gives structure to our purpose and calling is none other than communication with our Triune God. How else can we hold up our church, but in prayer with the one for whom this church exists?

I am calling on you, church, to make a special time each day to lift up the Lord’s church in prayer in three significant ways: 1, pray for the faith community. 2, pray for the pastors. 3, pray for mission of the church (Sunday service, impact in Wellsboro, and discipleship).

Praying in this way will, I’ve no doubt we can expect great things from our Good and Faithful God!
