Calling for an Avalanche

Calling for an Avalanche

When you hear of something falling from heaven, what is your first thought?

The word avalanche explains an object or objects falling at a rapid rate from above. We talk about avalanches of ice, snow, and/or rock. A heavy snow, a wash of rain, other heavy objects falling and collapsing jagged slopes, all of these trigger the traditional avalanche.

Avalanches indicate something on a higher point of earth falling to a lower point of earth. Yet the concept is no less devastating. But imagine something falling from heaven. Something greater than an avalanche brought remarkable brimstone falling from the sky, covering Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:24)—and again when Elisha called down fire on enemy soldiers (2 Kings 1:10). From the same heavens, God rained down manna bread grains for His hungry people (Exodus 16:31).

Prayer is the truer and better trigger for an avalanche. But not from one earthly point to another. The Lord assures us in Christ, that He makes “all grace abound” with “all sufficiency in all things at all times” (2 Corinthians 9:8). From where do we receive answer to our prayers, when we call on the name of the Lord? If the work of brimstone and the work of manna are astoundingly incredible, consider the work of prayer—in conference with the Almighty. Consider your every need in sanctification, in obedience, in stamina, in mercy. When you call on the Lord, “my God will supply every need of yours” from where but from His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).

God’s avalanche of answered prayer does not burden us but supplies us to please Him. Prayer ought to be our first exercise every morning for the rich supply to grow in Him the rest of the day. Without manna the people starve. Without prayer the Christian flounders. Call on Him and be awestruck by the open door of heaven.
