Jesus, the Bread of Life

Jesus, the Bread of Life

I can think of only two times when a person intentionally puts something disgusting in their mouth. The first, when a child has to take their medicine. The second, when a caring, well-intentioned relative or friend serves you a meal.

The problem with our cooking is no matter how tasty, we will be hungry again. But the bread the Lord gives satisfies. A grand sermon or song is only as good as the Lord who meets our hearts in the moment. What is truly grand is the heart humbly fed and directed by the work of the Savior. Such food not only tastes good, but does the healing work of the finest medicines the world could offer.

Jesus directs His disciples to bring forward seven loaves and a few small fish in Mark 8:1–13. The Lord directs, He orders, He blesses, and He feeds four thousand men plus women and children. The key word we find for those fasting with Jesus and humbly receiving His Word is found in Mark 8:8, “And they ate and were satisfied.” How satisfied were they? We cannot account for what entered into them, what was received is without number. However, seven basketfuls were gathered.

We must remember—as hungry as we are, as unnerved by the faults and follies of men, as anxious and unsavory as the world tastes—the Lord yet satisfies His people with His Goodness immeasurable. He will not cease in providing for you. There is real satisfaction not only in His blessings to you, but in His saving work for you. This is the food that nourishes even with the sweet savor of eternal promises.
