Emily has canned about ten jars of pickles so far this season. Dozens of zucchini muffins have been devoured. We anxiously await more green beans to harvest and can. I enjoy every bit of this process even though I have served very little in all that takes place between seedtime and harvest. When we are presented with a muffin or a pickle, we know full well the produce didn’t appear out of nowhere—much went into yielding the goods. So it is with how we receive the blessings of the Lord. We do not work to earn, but we do the work of experiencing and demonstrating the blessings God pours out unto His people.
We see this truth when we read Psalm 85:12–13, “Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase. Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.” Like the manna in the wilderness, the Lord showers those blessings for His people and gives us the joy of drawing upon Him the direction for how to use and apply that which He gives. The land, our spiritual life, yields, even as it is our responsibility to experience the harvest through obedience to His Word. The path is set for us, even as we are called to walk according to the lamp’s glow.
