How often do you pray? Do you petition the Lord in your prayers? Whether or not you pray every day, the growing Christians ought to desire to grow in prayer—not just in frequency but in depth.
I was greatly convicted over one verse in particular this morning as I considered the prayer life of Daniel. Here is what we read in Daniel 6:7, “All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, and the counsellors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.”
If you’re anything like me, you’ve read Daniel too many times to count. Yet, this line from the villains of the story struck me differently this week. As I assess my prayer life, would my enemy be able to scheme like this knowing I’d fall victim to the plot? Would those around me know how deep and methodical my prayer life and how frequently I bring my petitions only to the Lord?
Thirty days is all it would take. Daniel could just “fast” from prayer, from petition, from his longsuffering habit. How much would it change the habit we already have in place if we were to give up for thirty days? Or, the reverse, what if we prayed all the more vigorously, for thirty days?
The Lord does not “fast” from us for thirty days, nor thirty hours, minutes, seconds. Such is why He alone is worthy of every petition. We need Him every hour. May our habit be such that we would find accusations from the world that we call on the Lord too frequently, that our habit is too bold, that our dependence too much upon the King of kings. Make a personal challenge to spend thirty days adding a new regular prayer time to petition the Lord, and see how blessed the growth in a month.
